Public Transport System Around Amsterdam

The Amsterdam public transport system is run by GVB www.gvb.nl and comprises the tube, bus, train and Amsterdam trams service The "OV-chip card" allows unlimited use of all transport services for the period selected. The card is available at special machines located in stations and at the entrance of many Supermarkets.

A one hour ticket is available from GVB drivers and conductors, but this usually works out as the more expensive option. Organized groups of between 10 and 25 people can travel on the discounted group Amsterdam public transport ticket

Amsterdam Trams

The Amsterdam trams are the most effective form of public transport in Amsterdam for getting around the city, Amsterdam trams run regularly until 12.15am. After this time Night buses take over their role (see below)

Amsterdam Buses

Amsterdam Buses are chiefly used to access the outlying areas and suburbs of Amsterdam or after the trams have ceased running for the day. At night the buses are the main form of public transport in Amsterdam and operate from 12-7am on routes centering on RembrandtpleinLeidseplein and Central Station. The blue mini bus service runs from 9-5.30 pm and rides throughout the old city centre stopping anywhere on request much like a taxi service

Amsterdam Tube System

The Amsterdam tube system can be accessed at Central Station and other locations within the city. It is very quick but only really useful when used to travel further afield from the city centre or to the Amsterdam Arena.

Amsterdam Canal boats

Amsterdam canal boats are not strictly an Amsterdam public transport service, but they are a very popular way of getting around and seeing the city. The canal bus service runs from 9.50-7.45 covering 14 different stops along several routes. A day ticket costs approximately 16 Euros. The Museum canal boats are operated in a similar fashion with the added bonus that tickets include half price entry to many of the Museums found along the route.
